Welcome to ‘Mengzy Selects’, a monthly video column which features five recently released tracks by producers and labels in Asia and across the Asian diaspora. Your host is Mengzy: a Hong Kong-based DJ and producer, PhD in musicology, music journalist, and co-founder of Feed the Dragon.

Paperkraft ‘OK Corral’

Osaka-based Paperkraft released ‘Not C but K’ this month on HOMAGE in New York. With most of the six-track EP leaning towards progressive, ‘OK Corral’ is our favourite with its bouncy hip house vibes and undeniable energy.

Noni-Mouse ‘2 Big’

Judging from her growing catalogue, self-described ‘left-of-center electronica artist’ Noni-Mouse isn’t afraid of exploring across genres. Lately though, the producer has been looking backwards for inspiration, from an EP of ‘90s Indian pop edits dropped last summer to, now, her new garage-inspired single ‘2 Big’ via boxout.fm Recordings.

ISHXN ‘Bad Boy Boogie’

There’s no question Bangalore-based Dynamite Disco Club is a reliable source of quality nu disco, attracting producers from around the globe to sign tunes. Vocoder-led ‘Bad Boy Boogie’ by ISHXN is one of our favourite Dynamite singles to date thanks to its throwback French house sound.

Stones Taro ‘Finally Dub’

Now in its eighth year, NC4K is Kyoto’s spiritual home for all things “house, breakbeats, UKG and jungle”. Label head Stones Taro dropped the second instalment of its vinyl-only dub series on February 6, featuring a deadly remix of CeCe Peniston’s house anthem ‘Finally’.

Dirty K ‘Tokyo Sturdy’

Chinese producer and collector Dirty K released ‘Myogi’ on Eastern Margins last week boasting five originals and three remixes from artists like WRACK and Sonia Calico. The EP channels the Japanese rave-era scene and hardcore belter ‘Tokyo Sturdy’ is our top pick.
