Gonno makes long-awaited return to JIN with new track & video

Gonno has recently released his latest single ‘Energy Flash’ complete with an incredible psychedelic video. It marks the first single from his upcoming ‘JIN 08’ EP, which will be released with Taipei’s JIN label on September 29.

‘Energy Flash’ focuses on Gonno’s trademark sounds, with playful synths, engaging basslines and an overall charming and full-bodied atmosphere.

“I made the ‘Energy Flash’ track with the feeling of the simplicity like back to basic, the way I was back when I was a teen or 20 years old,” Gonno told Mixmag Asia.

Although the track is textbook Gonno, the rest of the upcoming EP, namely the track ‘Final Hate’, departs from Gonno’s typical sound, partly due to JIN Records label head Yoshi Nori.

When the collaboration began, Nori briefed the Japanese producer to create a new sound, much heavier and dirtier than the music he’s become known for. The project features both Gonno’s signature sounds and tracks entirely out of his comfort zone.

Speaking on the upcoming EP, Nori mentions “Towards the end of the pandemic, I went to this intimate DJ bar called Tunnel in Tokyo, where I met up with Gonno. He came with Voiski, whom I've been a huge fan of, so I thought this was perfect and asked them to do this EP together on the spot.”

“JIN is all about building our own community, so there is a personal feel, and that's one criterion where I'd like the label to always have: our own story,” he adds.

The video, created by Kissmet, pairs effortlessly with the track. It’s abstract and atmospheric, featuring flying worms, cascading octopuses and playful nondescript shapes, all moving in sync with the pulsating rhythm of the music in a freeform fashion.

Gonno has been prolific over the last few years, playing at esteemed events and venues such as Berghain’s Panorama Bar and Dekmantel, as well as releasing with highly established labels such as Ostgut Ton and Beats in Space.
