Mixmag Asia Radio: Klosing makes space for a minimal affair

Mixmag Asia Radio returns from a wee break by opening up our listening space for Taiwanese producer and DJ, Klosing.

He is also the founder of Evaporate, an electronic label that regularly hosts nights showcasing label artists; the label parties are held across Taiwan’s most revered dance floors. Just last month, Klosing hosted Slowmouth from Korea for Evaporate’s third anniversary at 23 Music Room, invited to Studio 9 together with local collective Break The Wall, and managed take the label event to Yuanbao in Tianjin, and Rabbit Hole in Beijing.

Klosing is known for creating a deep atmosphere graced with a humble omnipresence. Whilst minimal house is his current state of groove, he never holds back from cutting up breaks and esoteric grooves to keep things more than interesting.

Hit play below, and scroll on to listen to the sounds of Klosing.

Where are you based and how did you get there?

I was born, raised and based in Taipei.

What’s your favourite thing about the music scene there?

It's very safe, there are not many thieves or sexual harassers here. People embrace and respect each other highly.

In five words, what do your DJ sets sound like?

Deep, groovy, smooth, trippy and enjoyable

And in three words, how would you describe yourself?

Conservative, rigorous but humorous.

What recent trends in music have you been paying attention to? Have you caught onto them?

Ro-minimal is my favourite thing right now. But to be honest, I felt bored with that sound for a while, but after my first experience at Epizode in Phu Quoc, I found minimal music so… adorable.

Are there any producers and DJs in Asia that have recently caught your attention?

77Mushrooms, from Nanjing, China, is just one of the talented producers I know from China. We have cooperated on 2 EPs already, he is good at mixing Mandarin with minimal music, and most of his tracks have oriental vibes. Also, his track - DDD which was sampled from CoCo Lee's Di Da Di has been downloaded over 150 times on Evaporate's Bandcamp.

Slowmouth, from Cheonan, Republic of Korea, is the founder of the label Morsecode.kr's. He's not only good at producing but also DJing. Recently, he has started to do vinyl releases and overseas parties. It's such exciting news that we finally will have a Ro-minimal-focused vinyl label based in Asia.

Kibum, from Seoul, Republic of Korea, is a DJ, an artist and the music director of Air House festival, he always drops deep records behind the booth, and he had arranged a perfect line-up for Air House festival in May 2023. He has a kind, attentive and considerate heart, not only a handsome appearance, he's really a good DJ and an organiser.

There are too many excellent Asian artists I want to mention like Kimmtae, Mihak, Dott, Liem, Kensuke Fukushima, Massa, Koliseum, Eddie Hu, FF, Chouchou, Kyrie Yin, Jeff Chong, CiCe, Motti, Sunyoung, Kai.F. There are many DJs playing good minimal music or organising minimal events in Asia actually.

Tell us about the inspiration behind this mix - what drove your thoughts and emotions, and how did you curate your selection?

I have used many unreleased tracks from my label Evaporate; I'd love to present how good these producers are. And I think 126 BPM is perfect for listening at any time, no matter if you're working, jogging or driving.

What equipment did you record this mix on?

DDJ-RX & Mastering by Koliseum

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen happening from the DJ booth?

Unfortunately but luckily, no weird thing happened while my DJ set, hahaha!

Where can we hear you playing next?

宁 Ning Club & 61 Nanjing.
