Mixmag Asia Radio: Krit Morton brings abstract soul to the listening table

Expansive, vast and diverse — this is a shortcut to understanding the sound spectrum of Thailand's Krit Morton.

Over the last two years, Krit has quickly formed a foundational structure in Bangkok’s new era of club culture through his work as artistic resident DJ of nightclub and underground establishment Decommune. He also played a formidable role in the launch of DIAGE Festival in November 2023, which launched in the Thai capital as a technology-forward, innovative event for local creatives. To add to his list of recent accolades, Krit was also handpicked by Craig Richards to perform at the Quarry stage at Wonderfruit in 2022 — a stage known for its impeccable curation by mixing international and regional artists.

Krit’s sound emanates unexpected beauty through abstract sounds that are both delicate and robust at the same time — just a few minutes into listening, and he’s already got you looking into the deeper pockets of your soul.

For this year's penultimate episode of Mixmag Asia Radio, we welcome Thai native and creative Krit Morton and his profoundly abstract sound.

Tune in to Mixmag Asia Radio with Krit Morton below.

Where are you based and how did you get there?

I'm based in Bangkok, I am Thai and have grown up with my Thai family.

What’s your favourite thing about the music scene there?

It's a local and friendly affair, with a dance floor that isn't too serious.

In five words, what do your DJ sets sound like?

Mind Twist, diving Into the Story Telling, Deep energy, Beliefs and Friends.

And in three words, how would you describe yourself?

Eyes, Ears, Eat

What recent trends in music have you been paying attention to? Have you caught onto them?

I've been getting into the abstract, super deep, beautiful, funky, and harder vibes.

Are there any producers and DJs in Asia that have recently caught your attention?

YAAK LAB — A pioneer among Thai electronic music producers, contributing to the vibrant scene alongside many other artists from his era.

Pissawong Records — A recent label making waves by producing numerous outstanding dance music tracks in Thailand, known for attracting an enthusiastic party crowd.

The new generation of Thailand's scene — The current wave of talent in Thailand's local scene is both diverse and intriguing. Numerous captivating acts can be discovered, with platforms like Durian Radio offering more to explore and listen to.

Describe one prediction you have about dance music in a post-pandemic world that’s being driven by new technologies.

It has made its way into society, but in the Thai club scene, it remains relatively small compared to the increased number of exposed DJs after the pandemic. While technology offers a great way to showcase performances, there's a risk of forgetting the original essence of a DJ or musician, who traditionally relies on the ears to craft their work.

Tell us about the inspiration behind this mix - what drove your thoughts and emotions, and how did you curate your selection?

My inspiration stems from my recent performance at the Boiler Room stage at the Maho Rasop Festival 2023 in Bangkok. As I practised and then reflected on the journey, my vision revolved around a fusion of old-school electro and the next generation of this genre. This session brings me immense joy, as it allows me to infuse most of my emotions into a one-hour mix.

What equipment did you record this mix on?

Pioneer PLX1000 / CDJ3000 / Xone96

What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever seen happening from the DJ booth?

Lots of people are dancing to the music in the club when suddenly a guy holds up his phone, and the screen says, "Play it harder, please," :)

Where can we hear you playing next?

I was playing at Wonderfruit this past weekend. You can listen to me and another local DJ via Uthai Rave on SoundCloud and Durian Radio on YouTube
