Mengzy Selects - 022 / April

Welcome to ‘Mengzy Selects’, a monthly video column which features five recently released tracks by producers and labels in Asia and across the Asian diaspora. Your host is Mengzy: a Hong Kong-based DJ and producer, PhD in musicology, music journalist, and co-founder of Feed the Dragon.

Osaka-based KOOL SWITCH WORKS tapped Fetus for its first release of the year and his multigenre ‘Puppies’ EP doesn’t disappoint. The title track, with its melodic intro and breaks drop, makes for a great set opener.

In February, Braille broke a two-year solo drought with ‘Hot As Hell’ via Hotflush Recordings. As it turns out, that EP was a warm-up for his forthcoming sophomore LP, ‘Triple Transit’. ‘Cloud Monger’ is the second single to drop ahead of its June release.

Australian-Korean hip-hop outfit 1300 is one of Eastern Margin’s most exciting signings to date. With bilingual lyrics over an eclectic range of hybrid beats, 1300’s latest mixtape, ‘GEORGE’, is an auditory trip. With one foot in electro, ‘Lalaland’ is our standout track.

We have Nez Senja of Revision Music to thank for turning us onto DJ Rushmo’s ‘intro.version’ - a beautifully crafted hip-hop album. Formerly based in Singapore and now living in Bali, Rushmo dedicated the release to his late brother and ‘Dopamine Rush’ encapsulates the nostalgia at the album’s core.

‘The One Who Knocks’ has Teddy Chilla, seasoned beatmaker for Vietnam’s hip-hop scene, deliver deep dubstep. The Saigon-based producer also knocked out a sick Breaking Bad-inspired music video for the single that co-stars MC Rtee.
