Daft Punk's anime film Interstella 555 to receive 4K remaster for North America debut

Daft Punk’s elusive film Interstella 555 is set to be remastered for its debut North American screening this June.

The 4K remastered version of the film Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem will be debuted at New York City’s Tribeca Film Festival, which is set to take place June 5-18.

The anime film was originally released in 2003 as an accompaniment for the duo’s second major album ‘Discovery’, with the full-length anime written by Daft Punk in collaboration with Cédric Hervet, and directed by Japanese manga artist Leiji Matsumoto as well as Kazuhisa Takenouchi, Hirotoshi Rissen and Daisuke Nishio.

The anime details the story of four alien musicians who are abducted and disguised as humans by their producer, with a subsequent rescue mission carried out by their pilot Shep.

The full film had not been previously released and was scarcely shown in cinemas, however, excerpts from it were used for the music videos for the duo's ‘Discovery’ album — such as ‘Digital Love’, ‘Aerodynamic’, ‘Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger’ and ‘One More Time’.

Interstella 555 will feature alongside other films about music legends, including a new documentary about the life and impact of the late Avicii, called Avicii - I’m Tim.

Daft Punk split up back in 2021, following a 28-year career within which they released four studio albums, as well as an extended soundtrack to sci-fi film Tron Legacy.
